Depending on the situation, carpet flooring can be an ideal flooring option for you and your home. Our flooring experts at Floor Coverings International NW Dallas have extensive experience in helping choose and install the best carpet for residents of Carrollton and Irving. One of the first things we recommend is to identify which carpet fiber will best fit your needs. Here’s a quick look at some of the most common carpet fibers.
Nylon carpet makes up more than half the carpet sold in the United States. It’s the most durable carpet fiber and is resistant to stains, making it a great choice if you have children or pets. Nylon carpet is also resilient, meaning it has good “bounce-back” from foot impressions.
The two main types of nylon carpet are type 6 and type 6.6. Type 6.6 is higher quality and more expensive. Type 6.6 will often have name-brand labels, like 100-percent DuPont Nylon or 100-percent Mohawk Nylon.
Polyester carpet isn’t quite as durable and resilient as nylon carpet. However, it’s usually less expensive and more environmentally friendly. Much of the polyester used in carpets is made from recycled bottles.
Wool carpet is a luxury choice for homeowners looking for the highest quality. It’s the only natural fiber used in carpets today and has high grades on durability and resilience. Rather than offering 100-percent wool, many carpet manufacturers blend wool with other fibers (like nylon) to keep costs down.
Triexta carpeting was introduced in 2009 and has become one of the most popular carpet fibers. It’s very similar to polyester but has higher grades on durability and resiliency. Like polyester, Triexta carpet is good for the environment, using corn glucose in place of petroleum. Mohawk carpet markets Triexta carpet under its Smart-Strand label. DuPont’s Triexta carpet is called Sorona.
