At Floor Coverings International NW Dallas, we help folks in the greater Carrollton, Irving area find their dream flooring. One of the most popular flooring options for Carrollton families is engineered hardwood. For some homeowners, this variety of hardwood is a great alternative to traditional solid hardwood. Read on to learn more and see if engineered hardwood is right for you.

Solid vs. Engineered

When you think of hardwood, you likely picture solid hardwood. Solid hardwood is very literally a solid piece of wood. Cherry hardwood is a piece of cherry and red oak hardwood is a piece of red oak. Engineered hardwood consists of layers of composite wood with a solid hardwood veneer.

Why Engineered Hardwood?

Engineered hardwood was invented in 1945 in response to the huge influx of troops returning home from World War Two. The enormous demand for housing meant that homes were being built with concrete floors—not the traditional floating wood floors. This posed a unique challenge when it came to moisture. That is where engineered hardwood comes in. Whereas solid hardwood requires wood-based installation, engineered hardwood can be installed on any surface—including concrete. Here are few additional advantages to engineered hardwood:

  • Affordability: engineered hardwood is cheaper than comparable solid hardwood. This is because less of the board consists of actual hardwood.
  • Sustainability: because of the way it is manufactured, engineered hardwood is more sustainable than solid hardwood. The thin veneer top layer of engineered hardwood can be cut from a tree without the need of a saw. This cuts down on the waste from sawdust.

There is one disadvantage of engineered hardwood that is worth noting: it does not last as long as traditional solid hardwood. While a solid hardwood board can be sanded down and refinished up to ten times, an engineered hardwood board can only go through the same process three to four times.
